Prepping the zips

Autumn is here, the nights are drawing in, thoughts turn to Hallowe’en and the C word….. CHRISTMAS!

But not here in bag making HQ, its all about the jam!

Just when the August blood red fingertips from picking blackberries seem like a distant memory, I raided the freezer and pulled out 6 kilos of blackberries. I threw them into a pan with some apples (that have been donated from various back gardens in the vicinity of our house) and a few bags of sugar, YUM!

Just like Hallowe’en, there I was like a witch stirring my cauldron for most of Sunday afternoon and every time someone walked into the kitchen they took the wooden spoon out of my hand and pledged that they could do a better job than me (until they got bored or something more interesting was on the television).

The house now smells like a sweet shop and we have quite a lot of jam to show for it and I have a happy husband.  Apparently it is almost as good as my Mum’s marmalade. Almost.

New Fabric Designs, Creating Bags

As far as creativity and making in the sewing room goes, I am putting the finishing touches to the new fabric designs and I’ve been working hard to get a head start on making bags. The new fabrics will be going to the printers soon, so I hope that by early November the first bags will be making their debuts.

The preparation and cutting is the longest but most satisfying processes in bag making. Each zip is carefully cut and assembled and stitched into its own special piece of fabric. The main fabric body of the bag is cut and the inner denim is then washed, sized and cut, all to be assembled for orders and Christmas markets. I’ll let you know about where I’m going to be in the run up to Christmas very soon.

My husband said the sewing room looks like an explosion of colour and wonders how I can find anything.

It’s funny that you never notice the difference in colours of denim until someone points it out to you. I was recently visited by a neighbour who pointed out how many shades of blue that denim comes in so I took a picture of some that were just literally lying on the table…….
